I am guessing by now you've probably heard the economy is not doing so hot. With the exception of large companies plan, almost everyone is trying to keep their companies afloat. I admit that I run a small printing business and I'm doing everything to stay alive. This includes eliminating any unnecessary expenses. Lately I've been fortunate enough to attend a seminar for small businesses in my state. Colloquium revolved around a simple cost-cutting practices that do not have a negative affect the quality, morale, and daily routine of work. I found it very interesting language that suggested more green practices. Going green to me means spending a lot of green and not just on budget. As I learned throughout the meeting and the following research. Green products and practices save money. In the following paragraphs I will highlight only a few cost-effective green strategies I applied to my business.
The first and easiest way to save electricity is shut down computers during night. I always thought that computers should remain on at all times and screen savers use less energy when the computer is unemployed. I was terribly wrong. Screen savers use the same amount of electricity as the computer when it is was used. So leaving your computer run all night, is an unnecessary practice. Just make sure all your work is saved and the computer and monitor are properly shut. A desktop computer uses between 75-200 watts of electricity an hour and a monitor uses about 70 watts. It definitely adds up over time. This will also prolong the life of the computer.
My big mistake was inefficient lights before leaving the left for the night. Office cleaning staff usually comes around 22:00 and closed out all lights before leaving. This left a good three hour period with running lights and no one has. This habit is broken immediately. I also replacing regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights energy saving lamps. These energy saving bulbs are easy expensive, but they use about one fourth the amount of energy using regular light bulb and last 10 times longer. Language also added that anyone run for the new light lamps and cost money.
If this was not noted for me I never would have thought that the bathroom is so expensive. The average person makes six trips to the bathroom a day. Which means every time someone flushes a toilet or washing their hands they are spending company money. I know that sounds incredibly cheap, but no green water saving products that reduce the amount of water used. Products such as faucets and low flow toilets save water or both save a great deal of water. Once these products have a code greater than the price of regular products, but they do pay for themselves quickly. A dual flush toilet saves the average person in 1000 gallons of water per year. Keep in mind costs of water and wastewater are growing.
Depending on the employer the latter can not save company money, but can have a positive impact in the workplace. This sounds very cliche, but carpooling really helps environment and reduces transportation costs for employees. Well how does that affect the companies bottom line? People have a tendency to reverse while carpooling. For the most part that they find common ground to work so they tend to discuss work related issues. This helps build company morale and can lead to, "out of time, cooperation. People are also less likely to be late for work when carpooling.
