Is a fine steel circular blade OK to cut a formica counter top?
I bought a new "fine" blade to cut the counter, but it is steel, not carbide. Will this do OK? Also, I understand that I should turn the counter over and cut from the back - is this right? Many thanks!!
The fine-tooth steel blade should be o.k., but you will notice wear more rapidly than if it were carbide tipped.
When using a power circular saw or saber saw, cut from the back side of the laminate. These saws cut on the upstroke. Cutting from the back will help prevent chipping. On hand saws, cut from the front side at a low angle.
A strip of masking tape placed where the cut line is to be made helps prevent chipping and makes the line easier to see.
Cut the sheets of laminated plastic slightly oversized to allow for trimming. Something is not going to be straight and a little trimming is almost always necessary.
